  1. SUBJECT: NEW PRO-43 MODS ?
  2.  
  3. INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRO-43 CELLULAR RESTORATION
  4. 1. Remove the battery pack and cover.
  5. 2. Remove the four screws on back and GENTLY pry apart.
  6. 3. Remove the 6 silver screws from the 1st PC Board.
  7. 4. Remove solder from the ground pad and center feed
  8.    conductor of the antenna directly under the antenna on
  9.    the PC Board heat solder on top PC Board and center
  10.    feed will loosen, this is the only really tricky part
  11.    to this.
  12. 5. Disconnect the 2 plugs/wiring harness, make note of the
  13.    color scheme for re-installing.  Harness has 2-metal
  14.    guides on the side....BE CAREFUL NOT TO PINCH WIRES.
  15. 6. Lift top board away from bottom, paying careful
  16.    attention the black plug near the bottom of the
  17.    assembly, gently pry this apart.  DO NOT FORCE IT!
  18. 7. Remove 2-silver screws from the 2nd PC Board.
  19.    (remember to replace on re-assembly)
  20. 8. Remove solder from the four points on the large silver
  21.    shield covering the microprocessor board.  Remove        
  22.    shield. Make sure to replace shield on re-assembly       
  23.    as this serves as protection from intermod and           
  24.    interference.                                            
  25. 9. Near the bottom you will see a row of surface mount      
  26.    diodes (very small and square, approx 1/32" long,        
  27.    black with gray markings)  These will be in locations    
  28.    marked D1, D2, D3, D4, D5.   Some of the locations       
  29.    are blank.                                               
  30. 10.Use a very low temp iron (15-watt) and the smallest      
  31.    solder wick available, remove the solder from both       
  32.    sides of D4. Use hemostats or needle nose (very small)   
  33.    to grip while de soldering. Remove diode D4.             
  34. 11.Once D4 is removed you will have full 800 MHZ coverage   
  35.    and 30 KHZ spacing on cellular.                          
  36. 12.Save the diode you removed from the D4 position and      
  37.    install it in the D3 position being careful to make      
  38.    sure the diode is facing the same direction it was in    
  39.    the D4 position. This will increase the low band         
  40.    coverage from 30-50 to 30-88 Mhz.                        
  41. 13.Carefully re-assemble unit remembering to double check   
  42.    before going on to next step.                            
  43.                                                             
  44.    USE THIS PROCEDURE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!                  
  45.                                                             
  46. The 800 Mhz reception on the PRO-43 is superb.

  49. When you've re-assembled the unit.  Hit MANUAL, PROGRAM,    
  50. LIMIT, 870.00 ENTER, HIT LIMIT UNTIL "H" APPEARS AND THEN   
  51. 890.00 ENTER.  PUSH THE  "UP" ARROW AND YOUR IN BUSINESS.   
  52. With this modification, this really is a great radio.
